Prenatal Care for You & Your Baby Q & A

by Shereen Beverly, MD, FACOG

What is involved in a prenatal exam?

That depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy.  The first visit involves taking your medical history and performing a physical exam.  Blood and urine will be taken during this visit to get your initial prenatal lab tests.  The second visit will be to talk over your lab results and talk about pregnancy.  All follow up visits will include a blood pressure and weight check as well as urine testing.  Once the baby is big enough your belly will be measured and we will listen to the baby’s heartbeat.  Scheduled testing for genetic issues, diabetes and infections will be done at the appropriate time.  An ultrasound exam will also be ordered to check on the baby’s size and development.  You will also have plenty of time to ask questions and discuss your concerns about your pregnancy and your health.

How often should I see Dr. Beverly during pregnancy?

That depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy.  Under normal conditions your second visit will be two weeks after the first visit.  After that you will be seen every four weeks until you are between 30-33 weeks.  You will then be seen every two to three weeks until you reach 37 weeks.  From then on you will be seen every week until delivery.  All visits are tailored to each specific patient.  In some cases you may need to be seen more frequently or additional tests may need to be performed in an effort to closely monitor your baby’s progress.  Be sure to follow the appointment schedule the doctor suggests and avoid missing appointments.

When should I call my doctor between visits?

During pregnancy, you need to be especially aware of changes in your body that could signal potential problems. Call your doctor right away if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • severe headaches
  • vaginal bleeding
  • unusual vaginal discharge
  • painful urination
  • swelling of your hands or face
  • blurred vision
  • severe diarrhea or vomiting
  • dizziness or fainting
  • pain in your arms, legs or chest
