Menopause Q & A

by Shereen Beverly, MD, FACOG

How will I know if I'm going through menopause?

Menopause is the point in time when a woman's menstrual periods stop. Menopause happens because the ovaries stop producing the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Some people call the years leading up to a woman's last period menopause, but that time actually is the menopausal transition, or perimenopause.  During the time of the menopausal transition (perimenopause), your periods can stop for a while and then start again. Therefore, the only way to know if you have gone through menopause is if you have not had your period for one year.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

During perimenopause, your levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone will fluctuate, sometimes dramatically. As a result, you may experience a broad variety of symptoms, including:

  • hot flashes
  • moodiness
  • night sweats
  • fatigue
  • insomnia
  • depression
  • joint aches
  • headaches
  • irregular periods
  • vaginal dryness
  • incontinence
  • changes in your sex drive

Not every woman will experience all of these symptoms, and some women will experience very few symptoms before their period finally ends.

Can I become pregnant during perimenopause?

Although fertility levels drops during perimenopause, you are still able to become pregnant and should still practice regular birth control.

How can I tell when menopause is over?

Menopause is considered to have occurred when you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months.

Are there treatments for menopause?

There are treatments for the symptoms of menopause, including supplements to help manage hot flashes and moodiness and vaginal creams for dryness. Some women may decide to undergo hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat menopause symptoms and avoid some of the health risks associated with menopause, including osteoporosis. Dr. Beverly will discuss all your treatment options as well as any attendant risks during your exam. For thos women interested in herbal/natural remedies, Dr. Beverly has a working relationship with serveral compounding pharmacies.
