HPV stands for human papillomavirus, which is the most common sexually-transmitted infection in the U.S. More than three dozen types of HPV exist, and nearly everyone who is sexually active (especially those who have had several partners) will contract the virus at some point in their lives. In most people, the virus causes no symptoms and remains undetected; but in some people, it can cause cervical cancer or genital warts (small, hard bumps around the genitalia). HPV can also affect the mouth and throat.
No. Although all three are transmitted through sexual contact, HPV, herpes and HIV, the virus associated with AIDS, are not the same nor are they related. They also have very different health effects and treatments.
How can HPV be prevented?
Because HPV is so readily transmitted, the best way to prevent infection is by being vaccinated before you encounter the virus.
While HPV cannot be cured, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the health risks and symptoms associated with the virus. For most patients – about 80 percent – the infection will resolve on its own. In these patients, Dr. Beverly will monitor for cell changes that could indicate an elevated risk for cervical cancer. When the infection does not resolve, Dr. Beverly will custom-tailor a treatment plan based on each patient's individual needs. Services may include:
